Shh... Don't Tell!

Interaction / Spatial Design

Brief

To create a interactive exhibit for Droog, a dutch design collective which designs and manufactures furniture and architectural features, using the Superstudio 13 space within Zona Tortona at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Process

In the first week, studied the Droog brand. We wanted to highlight what made Droog different from other companies. Some key ideas that we wanted to emulate from their brand and products were their focus on witticism, irony and unadorned informality to their design pieces. We also looked at Droog exhibitions in the past and other interactive spaces to seek inspiration. By the end of the week we had two possible themes.

The second and third week was used to process interactive installation ideas that was related to our theme. We also had to consider how to design our exhibition space in a manner that communicated our theme through the experience of walking throughout the space.

In the final week we also created a prototype of the secret boxes from our exhibition. Using an arduino board, voice recorder and speaker we were able build an initial prototype where users could open a box once and record a message. Then when they opened it a second time, they would hear their message played back to them.

Exhibit Space

With a created theme based on learning about others from things you would find when prying around in their home, our team created an experience where users would be welcome to come into a home where they are encouraged to pry into someone else's life. We created a series of products and installations within our exhibition space where participants could share their thoughts, habits and activities for others to discover as they playfully experience the space.

Role

User analysis and research on the Salone del Mobile, and brand analysis on Droog was handled as a team. The team met together to brainstorm ideas and process them until we were satisfied with them as a group. 3D modeling, mockups and arduino prototyping was divided and shared amongst the team so that every member would have some experience in each area.
